It Starts With You by Lorena Bernal is a book about finding happiness

By Donna Richardson

Former Miss Spain Lorena Bernal recently launched her new book, *It Starts With You: How to Find Lasting Peace and Happiness.*

The event took place last week at Lavo restaurant at the Botree in London, conveniently located just off Bond Street. Her husband, Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta, along with some of her closest friends, were in attendance.

After a reception where attendees mingled freely, Bernal took to the stage to share excerpts from her book and engage in a Q&A session, all while Mikel proudly looked on.

Born in Argentina and rising from humble beginnings to fame, Bernal delved into the concept of happiness and the essence of life, guiding readers on a journey of self-discovery. In her writing, she reflects, “Even when your original situation is not ideal and you need to make sacrifices and work hard… you can choose to go through the process with joy and gratitude or with pain and suffering.”

She emphasised that if one chooses to dwell om hardship or pain, “the results will never be good enough,” urging a shift towards gratitude and presence, particularly for the sake of children. Bernal advocates for trusting one’s choices, particularly the importance of making decisions from the heart.

She challenges societal norms, acknowledging that social media can present a distorted image of happiness, “just an edited corner” of reality.

Bernal questions why adulthood brings a perception of life as a collection of problems and how we often engage in superficial distractions. “Beyond this shadow of deeply rooted belief that life is tough, we are told there is something called happiness,” she writes, highlighting the misconception that happiness is a destination.

Reading her book prompted reflection, as it is both candid and heartfelt. Bernal presents herself as an inspiring role model, tackling profound questions about happiness. When I asked about the secret of happiness, she shared that many who seemingly have it “all” still struggle to find fulfilment.

She recounted how, during her time in LA, she encountered numerous unhappy individuals. The old adage is money doesn’t make you happy. Social media also sells us a false version of happiness.

Throughout the event, Lorena and Mikel exuded happiness and support for one another.

Her book is a splendid resource for women, filled with empowering guidance. As she read, I found myself both inspired and touched by her insight into happiness and human emotion. This revelatory work encourages readers to find self-worth and not seek validation from external sources. Ultimately, the message is clear: true happiness comes from within.

The book is available on Amazon.
