The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced its schedule for BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX from September to early October 2025. It begins with a focus on Ridley Scott, a key figure in modern blockbuster filmmaking.
Scott’s career spanning over 60 years, creating films that range from grand epics to personal character studies. His work brings us to various settings, including the Roman Empire, futuristic Tokyo, and the Martian surface.
This retrospective features films chosen by Scott and includes events that celebrate his impressive and diverse body of work. Scott will participate in a conversation at BFI Southbank on 5 October, where he will discuss his career and creative vision.
He will also take part in a Q&A after a screening of his film “The Duellists” (1977) on 4 October. On the same day, he will introduce the screening of “Blade Runner: The Final Cut” (1982) at BFI IMAX.
Additionally, he will introduce “Thelma and Louise” (1991) on 5 October at BFI Southbank. A free exhibition called “Ridley Scott: Building Cinematic Worlds” will run from 1 September to 5 October at BFI Southbank.
Visitors can explore Scott’s artistic vision and enjoy items like storyboards, film posters, and clapperboards from his most admired films.
Other events include “Ridley Scott Associates: Short Film Showcase” on 4 September, featuring new and classic short films with their directors; “Behind the Vision: Crafting Ridley Scott’s Worlds” on 23 September, which will share insights from Scott’s collaborators; “Storytelling in Commercials” on 22 September, focusing on RSA’s innovative storytelling in advertising; “
Beyond the Trailer: Ridley Scott’s Revolution in Movie Marketing” on 30 September, where RSA CEO Luke Scott reviews groundbreaking marketing campaigns; and “Black Dog Films Special: Music Video Showcase” on 11 September, celebrating RSA’s music videos. Additional films showing at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX throughout the season include “Alien: The Director’s Cut” (1979), “Legend” (1985), “Someone to Watch Over Me” (1987), “Black Rain” (1989), “White Squall” (1996), “Gladiator” (2000), “Black Hawk Down” (2001), “Hannibal” (2001), “Matchstick Men” (2003), “Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut” (2005), “A Good Year” (2006), “American Gangster” (2007), “Body of Lies” (2008), “Prometheus” (2012), “The Counsellor” (2013), “The Martian” (2015), “The Last Duel” (2021), and “Gladiator II” (2024). In addition, “Associated Rediffusion: The UK’s First Groundbreaking TV Franchise” celebrates 70 years of modern commercial television in the UK. Launched on 22 September 1955, Associated-Rediffusion, ITV’s first weekday franchise for London, mixed highbrow programming with entertainment. It pioneered television advertising in Britain and broadcasting for schools.
This month-long celebration at BFI Southbank includes screenings of remastered shows, including the vintage sci-fi serial “Object Z” (Daphne Shadwell, 1965), which has not been seen since its original broadcast on ITV in 1965. It will be released on BFI Blu-ray on 22 September. The season will also feature dedicated comedy programs highlighting legends like David Frost, Ronnie Barker, Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, and The Pythons. These include “Ronnie Barker And The Pythons,” showcasing remastered works from 1968, 1967, and 1967 (previously released on BFI DVD), along with “The Fred Shows” featuring “A Show Called Fred” (Dick Lester, 1965).
