England, a land steeped in stories and legends, is a tale worth telling and seeing. Behold a breathtaking show that stitches together 2,000 years of history. The entire show is a dazzling spectacle which displays some of the best aspects of England, This is Kynren – An Epic Tale of England.

Some 1,000 volunteers and 150 animals command a sprawling 7.5-acre stage, as a young Arthur narrates, guiding the enthralled audience in the open air stadium through England’s vibrant past. Legendary figures leap into action, filling the night with emotion, drama, and excitement for a spellbinding evening. As the King of Camelot ages, the action unfolds and beyond over two Millenia.
Kynren, the outdoor live-action spectacle in Bishop Auckland, is an immersive journey through two millenia of British history. It is a show that spares no effort in delivering a theatrical experience that’s both breathtaking and educational. During our visit, it truly lived up to its reputation.
A warm but crowded welcome to The Viking Village
From the moment we parked in the yellow car park, we were impressed by the prompt shuttle service that whisked us to the event grounds – a smooth and hassle free arrival. But seemed we arrived at the same time as everyone else. As navigated the Viking village area as we found ourselves in a bottleneck ad the 8,000 strong crowd made their way to their seats and we were unable to immerse ourselves immediately in the experience.

But there was so much to see and do in the Viking Village. In the distance we watched the sparks fly at the blacksmith’s forge, and mingled with the characterful sheep, donkeys and real Icelandic chickens whose origins can be traced back to the 9th century. We could also hear the practice battle cries with the magnificent Viking warriors themselves as they prepared for a raid. We were able to pause briefly to engage with some of the impressive actors and actresses before we took our seats. They were a little far back, but once the show began any frustrations faded.
What a show
Kynren is a breathtaking visual feast, each scene designed to transport you through the centuries. The show opens with a grand sweep. A burst of colour and a series of stunning set pieces evoke the various time periods. We were transported from the ancient, mist-covered battlefields to the bustling streets of medieval towns, and all the way to modern-day England.

What a show
The stage itself is huge, stretching across the natural hillside like a sprawling canvas. As night falls, the sunset becomes part of the show itself with the colours merging into the set. One moment it is an ancient Roman fort bathed in soft amber light, and the next, it’s a Viking longship, complete with rippling waves projected onto the backdrop. Giant banners fluttering in the wind and the towering castles and fortresses emphasise the scale of the production, and soon, the air is filled with the sounds of clashing swords, the roar of battle, and a deafening rumble of hooves as the show arrests your senses.

Animal and Actor Choreography
One of the most striking aspects of Kynren is the seamless integration of animals into the performance. Horses gallop across the stage, their hooves stirring up dust as they charge through the battlefield. The herding scenes are particularly moving, with well-trained sheep, goats, and cattle moving in synchrony with the actors – a testament to the deep bond between the animals and their handlers.
There’s also dazzling displays of equestrianism, water jets, and special effects as well as heart-racing pyrotechnics that light up the night sky. All of this is enhanced by a powerful original soundtrack by award-winning composer Nathan Stornetta and the iconic voice of Kevin Whately as Old Arthur, guiding Young Arthur on his quest.
The jousting scenes are a visual feast, with knights in shining armour riding in synchronised formation, their lances gleaming under the lights. The sheer power and elegance of the horses as they charge toward one another create a moment of pure spectacle that feels larger than life.
Getting into character
The costumes are another highlight, with each character’s attire carefully crafted to reflect the time period they represent. Roman soldiers wear intricately designed armour, while Viking warriors sport fur-lined cloaks and gleaming axes. The vibrant hues of medieval knights’ tunics and the stately gowns of noblewomen create a visual contrast against the more muted tones of peasants and soldiers, adding layers of depth to the storytelling.

At the heart of it, the word ‘Kynren’ echoes the Anglo-Saxon term ‘cynren,’ meaning generation, kin, or family – a fitting name for Arthur’s epic discovery of his roots. As the characters move through these historical settings, the attention to detail in their clothing, props, and surroundings brings history to life in a way that feels both authentic and deeply engaging.
The Grand Finale
As the drama builds, the finale is marked by a dazzling display of fireworks that light up the night sky. Explosions paint the air in swirling patterns of gold, red, and blue, creating a sense of wonder and awe. It was an unforgettable visual crescendo. The fireworks are perfectly timed with key moments in the story, elevating the emotional stakes and leaving the audience in awe of the sheer magnitude of the show.

The entire stage erupts into a symphony of colours, movement, and sound. As fireworks light up the sky, the entire cast – human and animal alike – comes together in a dazzling display of synchronised choreography. The colours of the costumes blend seamlessly with the pyrotechnics, creating a moment that feels as if history itself is bursting in front of you.

The show at Kynren is a visual journey that you not only watch but feel. The expertly designed sets, animal performances, pyrotechnics, and costumes combine to create a sensory experience that brings the past to life in a truly epic fashion.
Overall, the production was nothing short of spectacular; it was a vibrant fusion of live-action drama, stirring music, dazzling lighting effects, and jaw-dropping pyrotechnics. The fireworks were among the best we’ve ever seen, brilliantly timed to elevate the show’s dramatic moments.
The characters felt authentic, deeply rooted in the historical periods they represented. This helped make the journey through time feel both engaging and meaningful and we loved every second.
Animals played a significant role in enhancing the storytelling, their choreographed appearances adding both realism and emotional depth. The herding scenes stood out as especially memorable, showcasing the seamless coordination between the animals and their handlers. Meanwhile, the thunder of hooves and clash of lances during the knights’ jousting drew audible gasps from the audience.
