Cyprus is the enchanting island where, according to legend, the goddess Aphrodite sprang forth from the sea. This captivating destination boasts breathtaking landscapes, from its sun-kissed beaches to its rugged mountains. Rich in history and culture, Cyprus is adorned with ancient ruins, charming villages, and vibrant towns, each telling a story of its diverse heritage. Visitors can explore archaeological sites, savour delicious local cuisine, and immerse themselves in a unique blend of Greek and Turkish influences, all while enjoying the island’s stunning natural beauty.

During my childhood, I spent my holidays in the enchanting town of Protaras, where the stunning Fig Tree Bay became my favourite getaway. The crystal-clear waters sparkled under the sun, and the soft, golden sands felt warm beneath my feet. Each day was filled with the joyful sounds of laughter, splashing waves, and the gentle rustle of palm trees swaying in the breeze, creating the perfect backdrop for unforgettable summer adventures.

We spent our days in a charming villa, embraced by the warm hospitality of the locals. Evenings were often filled with laughter as we played on the vibrant pinball machines at George’s Bar, a popular local hangout. The air buzzed with UB40’s upbeat rhythms, while nostalgic memories of Tetris and the refreshing taste of cold Keo Beer complemented our friendly pool matches. During the sun-kissed afternoons, we delighted in exploring the lively shops of Ayia Napa, discovering unique treasures and local delights. It was a summer of unforgettable experiences and joyous moments.

Now as an adult, I find myself leafing through literature and longing to return, in this quide we explore some of the interesting places to visit in the area.

The town offers a lively nightlife scene, featuring a variety of bars, clubs, and restaurants to suit all tastes. In addition to its beautiful coastline, Ayia Napa is rich in cultural attractions, including historical sites such as the Ayia Napa Monastery and the picturesque Sculpture Park. Whether you’re looking to unwind on the beach, explore nature, or experience exciting nightlife, Ayia Napa has something to offer for everyone.

Discover the rich history of ancient sites like Makronissos, which features an impressive collection of 12 Hellenistic and Roman tombs. These tombs reflect the architectural styles and burial practices of their time, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. As you wander through this archaeological site, you can appreciate the intricate designs and craftsmanship that have endured for centuries.

We took a boat around the coastline and circumnavigated the island. Our destination was the hauntingly beautiful ghost town of Famagusta. Since the 1970s, this once-vibrant community has remained silent and forgotten, its crumbling buildings standing as solemn witnesses to a bygone era. The vivid azure waters surrounding the island sparkled under the sun, contrasting sharply with the decaying structures that loomed like shadows of the past. Through my binoculars, I saw a few pieces of laundry flapping softly on a line in the gentle breeze, adding to the eerie stillness that enveloped the ghost town.

Throughout its rich history, Cyprus has been shaped by a multitude of influences, each leaving an indelible mark on the island’s culture and identity. The distinct Greek and Turkish regions stand as poignant reminders of the complex and often tumultuous conflicts that have characterised their relationships over the centuries. These areas not only reflect the island’s diverse heritage but also embody the struggles and reconciliations that continue to resonate in the collective memory of its inhabitants.

The cuisine of the region is wonderfully diverse, drawing inspiration from Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Lebanese, Syrian, and British cultures. This rich culinary tapestry offers a wide range of flavours and ingredients that create delightful dishes. One must-try option is Kleftiko, a traditional Greek dish featuring tender, slow-cooked lamb infused with aromatic herbs and spices. Additionally, indulging in mezze is highly recommended, as it offers a selection of small plates brimming with fresh ingredients, including hummus, baba ghanoush, and stuffed grape leaves. Whether you’re savouring the traditional fare as you taste the island, there is an abundance of delicious options to enjoy.

Travelling around the island is quite convenient, as many locals and visitors prefer to use mopeds, which allow easy manoeuvring through the narrow streets and scenic paths. Riding a moped not only offers the flexibility to explore at your own pace but also provides an enjoyable way to experience the island’s beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture. Whether you’re heading to the beach, a local market, or a popular sightseeing spot, you’ll find that getting around by moped is both efficient and fun.

When it comes to entertainment, there are plenty of festivals on the island, from the Ayia Napa Festival in September to the Paralimni Festival in February and the Flower Festival in May to the Open Summer Air Festival.

The Water Park offers a multitude of exciting activities for children, all set against a backdrop inspired by the enchanting myths and legends of ancient civilisations. As families explore the vibrant attractions, they will discover water slides, playful fountains, and leisurely pools that bring to life the rich tapestry of Cyprus’s lore, filled with tales of mighty gods and beautiful goddesses. This immersive experience not only provides endless fun but also sparks curiosity about the fascinating stories that shape the island’s culture.
