I head over to the vintage jukebox and select a tune, then rifle through the old records, enjoying the physical feel of the vinyl in my hand.

Upstairs there is one of the largest collections of vintage toys I have ever seen, its like walking into my childhood. Whether you’re a dedicated vinyl collector, an antique enthusiast, a fashion lover searching for one-of-a-kind clothing or simply someone who enjoys a nostalgic browse, Loughborough offers an experience that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else. At the heart of it all sits one of the town’s best-loved independent businesses…

The Retro Room – the heartbeat of vintage charm

Walk down Ward’s End, and you’ll find a shop that immediately captures your curiosity. The Retro Room isn’t simply somewhere to buy records- it’s somewhere to rediscover memories. One day I strolled past the Vespas and motorbikes, then went in and began chatting to owner Robin Derrick, and he made me feel instantly at home. He told me:

“I love music, particularly rock and roll, but I used to be a mod.”

The moment you step through the door, you’re greeted by shelves of vinyl, classic album artwork, vintage music memorabilia, retro advertising signs, jukeboxes and collectables that span decades of popular culture.

Then founding member of Shawaddywaddy, Malcolm Alldured, turns up, and we have the makings of a band. He tells me how the band was formed and then winks I have so many stories I want to write a book but they’d never believe me.

I spent many hours exploring the shop and then met Robin’s partner Jacky and another one of their friends, Shirley, who also helps out here and at Ab Fab over the road from time to time. There’s also a link to Allo Allo with another volunteer. More about that later.
