The rise of summer après and how shade is becoming the star of the show

By Donna Richardson

Luxury travel in the Alps is entering a new phase – one increasingly defined by a shift from season-led tourism to experience-led, time-centric hospitality. Traditionally, Alpine luxury has been anchored in the winter ski season, with resorts built around lift access and snow conditions. The cultural ritual of après-ski — a late-afternoon social peak that bridges sport and evening leisure – became one of the most recognisable expressions of the Alpine lifestyle.

That model is now evolving. Across the high-end Alpine market, destinations are repositioning themselves as year-round luxury environments, where skiing is only one part of a broader hospitality offering.

Industry observers at the recent SASTEX summer Alpine luxury forum describe this as a decisive repositioning of the Alps: from a seasonal sports economy to a continuous luxury-lifestyle destination, where the defining asset is no longer snowfall but the orchestration of time itself. They pointed to the evolution of ‘coolcations’ over the summer season, and with leisure at the heart of summer holidays at the centre of this shift is a light and shade.

Summer après extends Alpine luxury beyond winter; unlike its winter counterpart, it is not activity-triggered, though it can be tied to mountain biking.

Moreover, it is environment-led – beginning in the late afternoon and unfolding into evening as a continuous outdoor experience, where lunch, relaxation, and social drinking merge into a single extended setting rather than distinct phases.

In destinations such as St. Moritz, this has become a defining feature of the summer season, with venues like Paradiso St. Moritz positioning themselves at the centre of this new luxury behaviour. Here, the terrace is no longer a transitional space between service periods, but a fully integrated environment designed for extended dwell time – often from midday through sunset.

High-net-worth travellers are no longer organising their time around activities alone, but around privacy, wellness, and control over their day. In response, resorts are expanding beyond ski-led programming to integrate wellness, gastronomy, and outdoor leisure into more flexible, all-day experiences.

As a result, the traditional après-ski moment is giving way to summer après, which is not strictly activity-driven. Instead, it is environment-led – beginning in the afternoon and unfolding into the evening as a continuous outdoor experience, where lunch, relaxation, and socialising blend into one extended setting rather than separate stages.

In destinations such as St. Moritz, this behaviour is becoming a defining feature of the summer season. Terraces are no longer treated as transitional spaces, but as primary hospitality environments where guests arrive at midday and remain through sunset.

Crucially, this new model depends on continuity of comfort. Alpine summers are unpredictable. Strong sun, shifting temperatures, and reflective glare can quickly disrupt outdoor experiences. For operators, these changes directly affect dwell time, how long guests stay, which in turn influences revenue and service flow.

As a result, environmental control has become a defining feature of high-end outdoor design, and shade has emerged as an unexpected signal of luxury.

Historically, Alpine prestige was associated with exposure – open views and elevation. Today, luxury is increasingly defined by modulation, the ability to manage the environment while maintaining a connection to the landscape.

This is where modern shading systems are playing an increasingly important role. Rather than relying on static umbrellas or fixed awnings, many venues are using repositionable systems designed to adapt to changing light and weather conditions throughout the day. These solutions help maintain consistent comfort without interrupting service or requiring guests to move.

Set high in the Swiss Alps, Paradiso St. Moritz is a luxury club and restaurant with a terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains.

To improve comfort and usability, Instashade and Rosendale Design introduced a tailored shading solution that combines Instashade’s Nova Parasols and Café Series Parasols. The larger Nova models were installed using reinforced base plate systems to ensure stability in exposed mountain conditions, including wind and sudden weather changes.

The parasols were also customised to match the venue’s visual identity, with decorative trims printed on both the inside and outside edges of the canopies. In total, the installation included three 4m × 4m Nova parasols, three 4m × 3m Nova parasols, and six 3m × 3m Café Series parasols, creating a flexible and visually consistent outdoor environment.

Modern high-performance shading systems are designed with a few simple but important features in mind. They can be adjusted as the sun moves, are built to withstand harsh weather, and are designed to blend with the space’s architecture. Most importantly, they allow staff to manage outdoor areas smoothly while keeping guests comfortable.

Without adaptive shade, outdoor experiences naturally break up as conditions change. With responsive systems in place, the environment remains stable, allowing the afternoon to flow seamlessly from lunch into drinks and eventually sunset.

Taken together, these changes reflect a broader shift in Alpine hospitality. Luxury is no longer defined simply by access to the mountains, but by how comfortably guests can stay outdoors for longer. And in the growing culture of summer après, shade is no longer just protection from the sun. It has become essential infrastructure.
