Unwind on a Blissful Yoga Retreat in Mauritius

By Donna Richardson

When life becomes a relentless cycle of responsibilities and deadlines, true relaxation can feel elusive. Yoga promises calm, yet finding the time -and the setting – to fully switch off is often the greatest challenge. There are few places better suited to restoration than a tropical island, where warm breezes, ocean horizons and the gentle rhythm of nature encourage both body and mind to slow down.

It was with this intention that I travelled to the elegant Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort, embarking on a yoga retreat that would ultimately become a deeply restorative escape -one that left me feeling lighter, energised and quietly transformed after a period of fatigue and sluggishness and I was looking forward to meeting Tara Lee the host of the retreat.

Far from the grey chill of England, the island of Mauritius welcomed me with its warm, tropical embrace. The air carried the sweet scent of flowering frangipani, their vivid colours set against dense green foliage. Palm leaves rustled softly in the breeze, creating a soothing soundtrack that seemed to dissolve the stresses of everyday life almost instantly. Here, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and the gentle pulse of the ocean, I began to feel my energy return.

First Impressions

From the moment I arrived, the resort felt like stepping into another era. Designed in an elegant blend of French and British colonial styles, the property, part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World, exudes timeless sophistication without ever feeling formal or intimidating.

A welcoming host greeted me with a chilled drink and a cool towel, a simple gesture that immediately set the tone for the stay. From the veranda, I gazed across the sweeping grounds: a lazy river winding through manicured gardens, palm trees swaying gently and, beyond them, the endless shimmer of the Indian Ocean. It was impossible not to surrender to the unhurried rhythm of island life.

Gas-lit lanterns, Victorian-style bridges and plantation architecture lend the resort a nostalgic charm, while hammocks swaying between trees invite guests to slow down and linger. As I wandered through the gardens toward my suite, I caught myself smiling—half in disbelief that I would be spending a full week in such a beautiful setting, half in anticipation of the wellness journey ahead.

After a long overnight flight, rest came easily. My suite was spacious and thoughtfully designed, blending antique furnishings with modern comfort. Frangipani petals decorated the bed, while a private terrace overlooked the pool -a tranquil space that quickly became my sanctuary. Slipping into my swimwear, I stepped outside for a refreshing dip before settling into a gentle afternoon nap beneath the warm Mauritian sun.

A Gentle Rhythm of Wellness

The following morning began slowly and deliberately. I wandered through lush gardens to the Seven Colours Spa, where my first wellness activity -aqua stretching- was designed to prepare the body for yoga practice. Guided by a skilled Reiki practitioner, the session focused on gentle movement and breathing techniques to ease tension in tired muscles.

The experience laid the groundwork for the days that followed, enveloping everything in a sense of restorative tranquility, unhurried pace, and subtle transformation. Tucked away in a picturesque setting, the resort offers an impressive variety of wellness activities designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. Guests can engage in the fluid, meditative movements of Tai Chi, where every gesture feels like a dance with nature, or indulge in soothing massage therapy that melts away tension and stress. In addition to these offerings, there are guided meditation sessions that encourage deep introspection and a reconnection with oneself, as well as invigorating fitness classes that challenge and energise.

However, what truly sets this escape apart is the inviting atmosphere that permeates the entire resort; it creates a nurturing environment where relaxation doesn’t feel like just another item on an agenda but rather an effortless state of being. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing each guest to truly savour the moment and embrace the transformative journey they are on.

Afternoons often unfolded by the shimmering pool, where I would sink into the plush comfort of oversized daybeds. With a captivating book in hand, I would lose myself in the pages while the gentle breeze whispered through the palm trees. The distant sound of waves crashing against the shore created a soothing backdrop, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. It was a luxurious experience, a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, especially when I strolled down the golden beach, feeling the warm sand beneath my feet and the sun kissing my skin. Each moment felt like a small piece of paradise.

Yoga in Extraordinary Settings

The highlight of the retreat was undoubtedly the yoga sessions led by respected instructor Tara Lee. Warm, reassuring and deeply knowledgeable, she created an environment that felt welcoming even for beginners like myself.

Our first session took place at the nearby Château de Bel Ombre, a historic plantation house surrounded by rolling golf greens and tropical gardens. Arriving by buggy as the sun began to set, I felt an immediate sense of calm.

As we moved through a sequence of slow, mindful poses, the world seemed to fall away. My breathing steadied, my muscles relaxed and a quiet sense of happiness settled over me. In that moment, yoga felt less like exercise and more like a return to balance. I took in the rolling landscapes and it took my breath away.

Then we made our way to the chateau as the golden light softened the landscape, and the gentle evening breeze carried the scent of flowers across the lawn and lanterns lit, and the sound of the bats roosting as the birds sang their final chorus filled me with joy

Morning sessions were equally uplifting. Practising sun salutations beneath a cloudless sky, I felt renewed energy flow through my body—an invigorating start to the day that stayed with me long after the class ended.

Perhaps most unexpectedly, the retreat also offered a sense of community. Over shared breakfasts and conversations, friendships formed naturally among fellow guests united by a common desire for wellbeing.

Exploring the Island

One afternoon, our group ventured beyond the resort to the nearby Bel Ombre Nature Reserve and we took a jeep safari across the mangroves and jungle to see some of the natural beauty of this region.

a protected landscape spanning thousands of acres of forest and coastline. Travelling by jeep through winding trails, we encountered waterfalls, rare plant species and native wildlife, including monkeys and deer roaming freely in their natural habitat. Standing atop a hill overlooking the vast Indian Ocean,

I felt an overwhelming sense of peace -one of those rare travel moments that linger long after the journey ends. It was magical getting up close and personal with the ebony trees, which are now endangered, and wading through tropical foliage to the waterfalls – it felt like a real adventure.

Dining with a Sense of Place

Food plays a central role in the experience at Heritage Le Telfair, where dining is both refined and relaxed. With multiple restaurants across the estate, each meal feels like an occasion.

Food at Heritage Le Telfair is not simply part of the stay -it is the central rhythm around which the entire day unfolds, quietly structuring everything from dawn until long after sunset. Each meal feels deliberately placed, not as a pause between activities, but as a defining moment in its own right.

Mornings begin at Annabella’s, a charming plantation-style brasserie named after Charles Telfair’s wife, where breakfast becomes a gentle awakening to island life. Set within an airy colonial-inspired pavilion opening onto lush tropical gardens, the space is filled with soft light, the slow hum of ceiling fans and the scent of frangipani drifting in on the morning breeze. Birdsong carries through the stillness as guests ease into the day over abundant spreads of tropical fruit -mango, papaya, pineapple and melon -alongside baskets of warm viennoiserie, flaky croissants and rich pain au chocolat. Fresh juices, local yoghurts and made-to-order eggs add a sense of quiet indulgence, all served with an unhurried elegance that encourages lingering.

By midday, the rhythm shifts to the seafront, where lunch at the beachside restaurant quickly becomes a daily ritual. Fresh seafood, vibrant salads and aromatic Creole-inspired dishes are served just steps from the sand, with the lagoon shimmering beyond the terrace and the sound of waves providing a constant, soothing backdrop. A vivid red tagine pot and jewel-toned cocktails stand out against the ocean’s soft blues and greens, turning even the simplest meal into something visually arresting. Dishes such as perfectly seared tuna salad, grilled lobster with lime and herbs, and line-caught fish with citrus dressing reflect a cuisine that is precise yet unfussy -designed to highlight freshness and place above all else.

As the afternoon fades into evening, dining becomes more theatrical and immersive, reaching its peak at the Château de Bel Ombre. Arriving along a tree-lined avenue, the 19th-century plantation house emerges with striking presence – its neoclassical façade glowing in the last light of day, grand columns rising above manicured gardens that stretch into the historic estate. Set within the grounds of an 18th-century sugar plantation, the château carries the layered legacy of Mauritius’ colonial past, its architecture echoing an era of plantation grandeur.

As guests approach, the atmosphere subtly shifts. The stillness is broken only by the distant calls of monkeys moving through the surrounding canopy, their presence adding a wild, almost cinematic counterpoint to the refined setting. Inside, candlelight flickers across polished wood and white linen as French fine dining takes centre stage. The cuisine is rooted in classical technique – silky seafood veloutés, butter-poached lobster, fish with beurre blanc – elevated by Mauritian ingredients that bring a sense of place to every plate. Each course is composed with restraint and precision, allowing flavour, texture and provenance to speak clearly.

This sense of culinary depth is reinforced by the estate’s commitment to sustainable gastronomy. During seasonal events, visiting chefs—including those recognised with a Green Michelin Star for their environmentally conscious approach—create tasting menus built around low-impact sourcing, local farming and whole-ingredient cooking, reframing fine dining as both indulgence and responsibility.

In contrast, the seafront restaurants offer a more relaxed interpretation of French-inspired cuisine, where elegance is softened by salt air and open horizons. Here, tables sit close to the water’s edge, and the Indian Ocean becomes part of the dining room. French technique remains evident in the precision of sauces and plating, but dishes feel lighter and more fluid: grilled fish with citrus beurre blanc, delicate seafood risottos, and vibrant vegetable-led plates infused with island flavour. It is refined, yet unforced—luxury expressed through ease rather than ceremony.

As night falls, the experience transitions once more into atmosphere and sound. At the Cavendish Bar, live piano music becomes the heartbeat of the evening. Softly lit and intimate, the space is filled with the gentle cadence of jazz and classical melodies that drift through conversation, encouraging guests to linger over cocktails long after dinner. Sunset is magical and Sega dancers and live performances add bursts of energy beneath the night sky, while neighbouring venues offer fire-lit dining and music that echo across the estate. I also enjoyed a visit to Bomba for some African inspired food and some of the best grilled meats and jallof rice.

From breakfast at Annabella’s to barefoot lunches by the sea, from the grandeur of château dining to piano-lit evenings at the bar, food at Heritage Le Telfair defines the entire arc of the day. It is not background or accompaniment, but the experience itself—an unfolding journey through flavour, setting and atmosphere, where time slows and each moment is shaped by the act of eating well.

A Restorative Escape

By the end of the week, the transformation was undeniable. My energy had returned, my sleep had improved and the lingering fatigue that had followed me from home had quietly faded.

More importantly, I rediscovered the simple pleasure of slowing down.

The combination of gentle exercise, nourishing food and the restorative power of nature proved remarkably effective. Sometimes wellness does not require complicated routines—only the right environment and the willingness to pause.

The Verdict

Heritage Le Telfair offers more than a luxurious holiday; it provides a genuine sense of restoration. Elegant surroundings, attentive service and thoughtfully designed wellness programmes create an experience that feels both indulgent and meaningful.

For travellers seeking a refined escape that balances relaxation with rejuvenation, this Mauritian retreat delivers exactly what modern life so often lacks: time to breathe, reset and reconnect.

And in today’s fast-moving world, that may be the greatest luxury of all.
