Playing well at the home of LEGO

By Donna Richardson

The idea for our trip began, as many family adventures do, in a quiet, unexpected moment at home. One evening, our daughter became completely absorbed in a YouTube video about LEGO, not just the colourful bricks she already loved, but the story behind them. She watched, wide-eyed, as the journey of founder Ole Kirk Christiansen and his son, Godtfred, unfolded – a story of creativity, resilience, and imagination passed from one generation to the next.

What stayed with her and with us was not just the history, but the sense that LEGO was something more than a toy. It was an idea. A way of thinking. A reminder that building, experimenting, and even starting again are all part of something bigger.

From that moment, the seed was planted.

So when we finally found ourselves driving at Billund airport and the short drive there, that quiet spark had grown into something much more tangible. As we passed LEGOLAND, bright colours rising into view and familiar shapes appearing along the horizon, the excitement in the car was unmistakable. Our daughter leaned forward, pointing out everything she recognised, her earlier curiosity now transformed into pure anticipation.

By the time we pulled into the leafy grounds of LEGOLAND Holiday Village, just minutes away, it felt as though we were stepping into a story she had already begun to imagine.

Instead of a traditional hotel arrival, we found open green spaces, wooden cabins, and laughter drifting from nearby play areas. It felt relaxed, outdoorsy, and instantly welcoming – more like a Scandinavian summer camp than a theme park resort. It was Easter and the staff were so welcoming and friendly.

First Impressions: Space to Breathe

The official luxury options may be Hotel LEGOLAND or the fairytale-inspired LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, but the Holiday Village offers something different: a quieter, more grounded kind of escape.

Set among trees and winding paths, it gives families room to spread out, run freely, and truly unwind after busy days. Check-in was effortless, and within minutes, we were strolling toward our cabin, the children already darting ahead with excitement.

The themed cabins – from pirate hideaways to woodland lodges — transform even bedtime into part of the adventure. Our own cabin was simple yet comfortable, thoughtfully designed with everything a family needs. Bunkbeds for the kids and a bed for us and table and tv – simple but warm and cosy, the Danes have a word for it called Hygge. It leans more toward practicality than indulgence, but that is precisely its charm. This is not about polished luxury; it is about easy, joyful living.

The Best Part: Life Outdoors

What sets the Holiday Village apart is its celebration of outdoor life. Children move effortlessly between playgrounds, open lawns, and building areas, rarely stopping for long. Friendships are formed within minutes, and there is a reassuring sense that everything has been designed with families in mind.

For us, the highlight was the pace. After a full day exploring, we returned to the village, prepared a simple dinner, and watched the children play outside long after sunset. It felt wonderfully nostalgic – a reminder of holidays before screens, schedules, and constant distractions.

Billund

Billund may be small in size, but it carries an outsized sense of imagination and purpose. Tucked into the Danish countryside, it feels less like a typical destination and more like a place built around a single, powerful idea: creativity.

Arriving in Billund is refreshingly simple. There is no overwhelming rush or urban intensity – just clean air, open space, and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere. Everything feels close, manageable, and thoughtfully designed, making it ideal for travelling with children.

Of course, the town is best known as the home of The Lego Group, and that identity is woven into its character. From playful architecture to subtle design details, there is a sense that imagination is part of everyday life here, not just something reserved for attractions.

What makes Billund particularly special is its pace. Days feel unhurried. You can move easily between experiences from the excitement of LEGOLAND Billund Resort to the creativity of LEGO House without the stress of long journeys or tight schedules.

Even beyond the headline attractions, there is a softness to the town. Green spaces, quiet paths, and family-focused environments create a sense of ease that is often missing from busier destinations.

Billund is not about excess or spectacle. It is about thoughtful experiences, shared moments, and the simple joy of spending time together – all anchored by a spirit of creativity that makes the entire place feel quietly unique.

A Day at LEGO House – The Heart of Creativity

While the theme park may be the main attraction, the true soul of Billund reveals itself at LEGO House. Located in the centre of town, just a short distance from LEGOLAND, LEGO House is a striking architectural landmark. From the outside, it resembles a stack of oversized LEGO bricks, boldly arranged as if mid-build – playful yet precise.

Inside, the experience is something else entirely.

Spanning 12,000 square metres and home to over 25 million LEGO bricks, LEGO House is less a museum and more a living, breathing celebration of creativity. Divided into multiple zones devoted to the primary colours — including interactive play areas and curated exhibitions – it invites visitors of all ages to explore without rules or expectations. From giant LEGO dinosaurs to rainbow waterfalls, it is a place where imagination runs free.

Every space encourages experimentation. Children move between vibrant zones, building towers, designing characters, and testing ideas, while adults quickly find themselves drawn in. There is no right way to play here – only the freedom to create.

We started with the primary colours and five bricks then moved on to more complex builds. It was purely magical to discover LEGO as a family. My daughter and fiancé are avid LEGO fans, but I am rediscovering it.

One of the highlights of our visit was the LEGO Masters Academy, where we learned to build together as a family. It turned play into something shared and collaborative, reminding us that creativity is often best when it’s simple, hands-on, and enjoyed together.

Eat with Robots

One of the most memorable moments of our visit came at the MINI CHEF restaurant – an experience that feels as though it has been lifted straight from the imagination of a child.

Here, dining begins not with a traditional menu, but with LEGO bricks. Families build their own meals by selecting coloured pieces that represent different ingredients, creating a playful and intuitive ordering system. Once complete, the order is scanned directly at the table, turning the act of ordering into part of the fun itself.

From there, the experience continues behind the scenes, where the kitchen prepares each dish before it is delivered through a clever automated system -adding a final touch of theatre to an already imaginative setting.

From there, the process becomes part of the spectacle. Behind the scenes, the kitchen brings each creation to life before dishes are sent through a clever delivery system — arriving at the table via robots. For children, it is pure magic; for adults, an unexpectedly sophisticated blend of innovation and nostalgia.

The meals themselves are thoughtfully prepared – balanced, satisfying, and genuinely tasty – proving that the experience is not just about novelty but quality, too. You choose each block of food from protein to carbs and salads and the result is amazing – nutrition is paramount here after all it is the building blocks of life and it teaches kids to eat healthily. We all had fun choosing our meals and we got some delicious options and it was so exciting getting the meals from the robots.

Evenings That Feel Like Childhood

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the Holiday Village, the atmosphere transforms into one of tranquil charm. Children pedal their bicycles joyfully along the winding, tree-lined paths, their laughter mingling with the gentle sounds of scooters gliding past. Families gather outside their cosy cabins, sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company as the sky gradually turns shades of pink and orange.

Dining, Playing, and LEGO

At LEGOLAND Billund Resort, mealtimes often blend naturally with play, especially for families. In places like the Holiday Village and Pirates’ Inn, LEGO bricks are never far from the table. Children build small creations while waiting for food, turning dinner into a relaxed, creative part of the day rather than a pause from it. At Pirates’ Inn, the themed pirate setting adds to the atmosphere, with buffet-style dining that keeps things easy and informal. Families eat, talk, and build together, all in the same moment.

It is simple, unstructured, and joyful, where food and imagination sit side by side comfortably. The delightful aroma of barbecues wafts through the air, tantalising the senses and inviting everyone to partake in the communal feast. Nearby, clusters of friends and family sit at picnic tables, laughter ringing out as they flip burgers and roast marshmallows over glowing fires. This vibrant scene is alive with energy, yet it maintains a peaceful, welcoming feel -creating the perfect backdrop for cherished memories to unfold. The Holiday Village embodies the rhythm of a classic family holiday, where moments are savoured, connections are strengthened, and the spirit of togetherness thrives.

A Day at LEGOLAND

A visit to LEGOLAND Billund Resort begins with a very particular kind of anticipation. Even before you reach the entrance, the atmosphere shifts — colourful structures rise above the treeline, familiar LEGO shapes come into view, and the park suddenly feels less like a destination and more like stepping into a childhood memory brought to life.

Once inside, the experience unfolds into a series of themed worlds, each carefully built around imagination and storytelling. Knights’ kingdoms, pirate harbours, and vibrant LEGO cities are all recreated in extraordinary detail, making it easy to forget you are surrounded by plastic bricks and not a living, breathing miniature universe.

One of the most striking areas is Miniland, where entire cities and landscapes are recreated with astonishing precision. Tiny trains move through detailed stations, boats glide across waterways, and miniature figures bring each scene to life. It is the kind of place where children slow down without being told — simply because there is so much to notice.

The rides are designed with families at their heart. There is a gentle balance between excitement and accessibility, meaning younger children can enjoy much of the park without feeling overwhelmed, while older ones still find plenty of adventure. It creates a rare kind of shared experience where everyone, regardless of age, finds their own version of fun.

What makes LEGOLAND truly memorable, though, is not just the attractions — it is the atmosphere. There is a constant sense of shared joy: families laughing together, children proudly showing off their builds, and that unmistakable feeling that play is not just allowed here, but celebrated.

As the day winds down and the park begins to glow in the soft evening light, there is a quiet satisfaction in watching families leave slowly, still talking about what they built, what they rode, and what they will come back for next time.

LEGOLAND is not simply a theme park. It is a carefully crafted world where imagination becomes tangible and, for a day, everything feels just a little more possible and everyone gets along.

A Warm Escape at Lalandia

One of the most unexpected highlights of our stay was discovering Lalandia — a welcome contrast to the crisp Danish air. Stepping inside felt like entering another world entirely. Suddenly, we were surrounded by warmth, palm trees, and the unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere. Here it is, eternal twilight, and it is reminiscent of a Roman square with its very own Colosseum with entertainment.

The tropical water park quickly became a family favourite. Children darted between slides and pools, while adults relaxed in the gentle heat, enjoying a slower pace. It offered the perfect balance to outdoor adventures – a place to thaw out, recharge, and simply have fun together, whatever the weather.

There is something wonderfully transporting about Lalandia. One moment you are wrapped in coats against the cool Scandinavian breeze, and the next you are immersed in a sun-soaked escape that feels miles away from Denmark.

It is this contrast that makes it so memorable — an effortless shift from fresh air to tropical warmth, from high-energy days to relaxed, carefree moments as a family. We laughed as we enjoyed pizza and the atmosphere and games and even a game of bowling and a round of crazy golf!

The Verdict: Where Simplicity Meets Magic

Staying at LEGOLAND Holiday Village is not about five-star luxury in the traditional sense. It is about something far more meaningful: space to play, time to connect, and the freedom for children to simply be children.

One of the most delightful advantages of staying at LEGOLAND Holiday Village is the effortless simplicity that permeates the experience. The theme park, bursting with vibrant rides and attractions, is just a pleasant stroll away, allowing guests to savour the anticipation of each adventure. Meanwhile, LEGO House, a creative wonderland filled with imaginative exhibits, is a mere short taxi or bus ride away, easily accessible for those looking to dive into the world of LEGO.

This ease of access transforms the rhythm of your vacation. Instead of feeling rushed or overwhelmed, each day unfolds at a leisurely pace. Mornings are filled with exhilarating rides and laughter, afternoons are enriched with the joy of building and creating, and evenings are spent returning to the village, where relaxation and comfort await. The experience feels seamless, allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in the magic of the moment.

Paired with a visit to LEGO House, it becomes something truly memorable.

Because in Billund, the magic does not end when you leave the theme park. It continues – in the quiet corners of playgrounds, in handfuls of colourful bricks, and in those unhurried moments when imagination quietly takes over.
